The modern life seems to be characterized by a surplus of activity and a dearth of meaning, lived in a constant fury but without an abiding passion. This seems to be as true for followers of Christ as it is for those without that promise of life and hope.
So we ask that you imagine with us for the next few weeks what life could be if we lived for something greater than tomorrow’s deadlines, more lasting than the world’s “stuff,” beyond our own kingdoms, and focused instead on the purposes God has for our lives, our churches, and our world.
Dan Hall reminds us that God has had these purposes from the very beginning. It is we who have misunderstood it, been distracted from it, and lost it in the routine of our lives. The time is now for the people of God to renew their partnership with Him in His passion and for His purposes in the earth.
Part 1 - Opportunity of Generosity
1 Timothy 6:17-19
17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
Part 2 - Overcoming Myopic Egocentricity
Acts 1:6-12
6 So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
