Ash Wednesday is the official beginning of Lent and marks the beginning of this 40-day period of fasting and prayer with a time of reflection, confession, and repentance of sin.  It reminds us of our mortality ("ashes we are, and to ashes we will return") and of our unrighteousness before a holy God.  It then leads us into the promise that He will trade beauty for our ashes, even as we anticipate Christ's work on the cross and His resurrection that foreshadows our own.
